Canadian grocer January-June 1910 . he Store. Character Sketch of one Merchant Who Will Never Make aSuccess—Removing Pickles and Mackerel With the Hands —Marked Indifference so Far as Customers and Cats are Con-cerned. By Frank Scott. He stands outside his place, one handabove his head, grasping firmly an awn-ing pole. A dirty apron has worked it-self into a great crease pust above alarge prominent abutment; often spokenof as a corporation. A red-faced in-dividual has just been telling him afunny (?) tale, and his great front andsides are spasmodically rising and fallinglike the great waves rolling in from thesea. After a time Mrs. Lazybones comeswaddling down the street and takes herslovenly form into the store. As comes in to wait on her the catjumps down off the meat counter, wherehe has just been chewing the juicy endof a chuck-roast. Our grocer is nowmoving about quite briskly, at least asmuch as his bulky form will permit. The pickles he takes out of the barrelwith his fingers, and the same operation. A red-faced individual has just been telling him a funny story. Needless to say, he is not overly rush-ed with business, as a glance at hisgreasy front and another at the storessqualid appearance seems to satisfy allpossible customers. The only way he isable to keep in business at all is bykeeping open almost night and day. Someof the goods on his front look as if theyliad b«en dumped down about twenty-five years ago and never been movedsince. is performed on a very rusty he goes over to the meat block andcuts a so-called steak, although it looksmore like a mis steak. Now he thinksit about time to wash his dirty paws,so he pulls out a greasy rag from underthe meat counter and after a moisteningprocess with the same wipes an addition-al layer on his dirty apron. Mrs. Lazybones having been waited onshe proceeds to the street, after giving much information as to how Mr. Lazy-bones is and about a dozen other smallerLazybones from the size
