On his way out to the Mediterranean in 1758, Vice-Admiral Brodrick hoisted his flag in the Prince George as convoy to a merchant fleet. The ship took fire at sea on 13th April and was totally destroyed. He stripped off his clothes and jumped in the sea where he swam for an hour before being picked up by one of the merchantmen.
