The striking feature of the lying in state, of King Christian, at Copenhagen, Denmark, was its extreme simplicity, and the abundant evidence of the loving reverence of the members of the royal family who spent most of their time in the room arranging the flowers and dis- posing of newly arriving wreaths and •floral designs. The coffin was placed in the middle of the room, before the gaze •of the Danish kings and queens, whose pictures line the red tapestried walls. It was covered with two Danish flags and lay amid banks of flowers and surround- ed by wreaths, lilies, pink and white roses, violets, lily of the valley and car- nations. The entire absence of black from the "garden" room was note- worthy. The red walls, gilded window frames and the multicolored flowers, among which the king's favorite Magna ?Charta rose predominated, completely removed the gloom of the usual death chamber, the whole grouping rather sug- gesting the glorious crowning of an honored life.
