It is of spreading habit, grow- ing extremely thick right from the base, and requires but little pruning to keep i; in shape. The leaves are small light green, and towards fall assume rich, brilliant colors, the fruit or berries becoming scarlet; absolutely hardy in all parts of the country. Of all ornamental hedge plants this is the most popular, and more of it is planted than all olhers combined. Its foliage is a rich dark green, and is nearly evergreen, remaining on the plant until midwinter. It is of free growth, and succeeds under the most adverse conditions, such as under dense shade of trees, where other plants would not exist. To form a dense hedge from the base up the plants should be severely ]iruned the first two seasons. Plant the one-year-old size 8 inches apart in the row, the larger sizes 10 to 12 inches apart.
