This type of forest is extremely productive and is a substantial part of the timber harvest in western Washington and coastal British Columbia. Nearly all of the timber harvested in Alaska is from hemlock-spruce forests. Besides its value for timber, hemlock-spruce forests provide habitat for wildlife, and streams for spawning and rearing habitat for salmon and trout that sustain an important commercial sport fishery. Scenic and recreational opportunities are also provided for many people. Researchers from the Pacific Northwest Forest Experiment Station recently published Management of Western Hemlock-Sitka Spruce For- ests for Timber Production, GTR-PNW-88.
