SMITH, Nicholas Groesbeck, presi-dent of the California Mission, andeighth Bishop of the 17th Ward, SaltLake Stake, was born June 20, 1881,in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son ofApostle John Henry Smith and Joseph-ine Groesbeck. He was baptized onthe eighth anniversary of his birth-day, June 20, 1889, by his three years old he accompaniedhis mother to Great Britain, his father at that time presiding over the Euro-pean Mission. After Ieturning toUtah with his mother in 1884 he re-ceived a common school education,first in Salt Lake City and afterwards. in Snowflake, Arizona, and Manassa,Colorado, where his mothers familyspent about ten years while in exile onaccount of the anti-polygamy perse-cutions. Apostle John Henry Smith,during that period only had the oppor-tunity of visiting that part of his fam-ily occasionally. Returning to SaltLake City in 1897, Nicholas G. at-tended High School from which hegraduated in 1902. From his earliestyouth he took an active part in Sundayschool and Y. M. M. I. A. work, actingas librarian of the Sunday school. Hewas ordained a Deacon and Priest suc-cessively and later ordained an Elderby his father; he filled a mission to theNetherlands in 1902-1905, duringwhich he acted part of the time aspresident of the Amsterdam Confer-ence and was the instrument of add-ing thirty new converts to the gospelby baptism.
