Breast cancer surgery planning. Pre-operative view of the breasts of a 52-year-old woman prior to surgery to excise breast cancer from her left breast

Breast cancer surgery planning. Pre-operative view of the breasts of a 52-year-old woman prior to surgery to excise breast cancer from her left breast (upper right). The planned operation (removal of part of the breast and the nipple) will be followed by immediate reconstruction of the breast using a DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap. This flap of tissue (skin, fat and blood vessels) is taken from the lower abdomen and attached to the mastectomy site to reconstruct the shape and appearance of the excised breast. For a sequence showing this patient before and after surgery, see images C038/9452 to C038/9454.
