Cardiff has a new supei-iorlodging-house for women, modelled after our popular aik,and premises are being put into shape for a like one with?Creche attached, opposite the Hanbury Street Training Home for obstetrical nurses has been openedin connection with the Maternity Home, and bids fair tobe a great boon to many poor women who cannot affordto purchase skilled attention in their hour of trial. A?new Rescue Home is shortly to be inaugurated which will,be maintained by thank-offerings from girls who have fe^ ^,. SOUTH LONDON SHELTER passed through the Rescue Homes and are now earninghonest livelihoods. Slum workers and slum jK)sts have had their numbersmuch increased. FOR JAIL-BIRDS. The first Prison Gate Home was opened in has received 211 men and boys, 20 of whom were undereighteen. The aggregate sentences of those received smnup to 216 years and 3 months. In addition to these, 79men have been met at the prison doors and sent diicct toan Elevator. The Criminal and Investigation Departmenthas dealt with 165 cases; 27 are still on their books; 79 ofthe remaining 138 have been aided. In the other cases, prisoners whose friends apply tonsfor aid refused even assistance. Special care is given toaiding and re-establishing first offenders. The Advice Bureau has given much help and solace ina quiet way. EMIGRATION. The Emigration Bureau has been scarcely more, asyet, than a tentative thing. However, 837 people have
