Nothing is knownon these points, and up to the present time no work by Rembrandtot earlier date than 1627 has been discovered. It must also beadmitted that his first pictures—for the: works of this date arepaintings—give little presage of future greatness, and scarcely in-dicate the character of his genius. Paul in Prison, formerly in the Schônborn collection,and acquired by the Stuttgart Museum in 1867, bears the date 1627, together with the signature and monogram here is, on the whole, a mediocre: work; dry in handling, gray incolour, and perfunctory in the treatment of chiaroscuro.
