This portrait of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was done by the nineteenth-century British Victorian painter George Frederic Watts. Darwin was an English naturalist who laid the foundations for the theory of evolution. It was in the 1860s that Darwin grew a bushy beard. Among his best known works are The Origin of the Species and The Voyage of the Beagle.
