From the side,P9 = rightlimb of the 5tli pair. Throughout the transparent membrane of the pouch (/>)opaque yellow central masses assuming the shape shown in State of Development in Brachydesmus. 283 figures 2 and 3 (dotted parts) could easily be seen. Theirdevelopment was so advanced that two joints could bedistinguished; a basal lateral joint (co), the outline ofwhich is very distinct, is the equivalent of the distal coxa]process, with the inner face of which articulates the secondjoint or telopodite (te) ; the base of the coxa dipping in thegeneral cavity of the body is hidden from view. The secondjoint is almost entirely visible—that is, as far as not concealedby the eoxal process. When viewed from the side (fig. 2)it is represented by a rather stoutish stern feebly archedbackwards and with a slightly concave posterior surface. The same ; posterior surface. (Same lettering as fig. 2.) If is divided at its second third into a posterior transverserounded ridge (r 1), which is scarcely protruding; and ananterior tapering, antero-posteriorly flattened process (72),which is longish and angularly directed backwards, over-lapping the posterior rid»e. That these organs should be gonapods can by no meansbe contested ; their location and structure leave no roomfor auy other hypothesis. Moreover, should these organsbe compared with the gonapods of other full-grown adultPolydesmids, a striking general resemblance will be found 19* 284: Mr. R. E. While in the genus Polydesmus (20 body-segments) most of the species show gonapods more or lessdeeply divided into two distinct processes, the great majorityof the Brachydesmus species (19 body-segments) possessgonapods either undivided at all or but slightly
