Men electrofishing in Hertfordshire 1964, probably the River Beane. Electrofishing is a method of determining a river's fish population and abundance; also to assess a river's health. Fish are stunned for a short period; they are removed carefully with a net, examined and then returned alive. The potential harm done to fish is a topic of debate and can be related to how properly the work is executed. The boy on the left of this photo is holding pike which were often removed from trout waters in the 1960s. The men on the boat are wearing shades to see better into the water, not to look cool!
