Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of mature wood of Picea abiens, the Norway or European spruce, better known as the Christmas tree. It is a large evergreen conifer native across parts of central and northern Europe. Running from top left to bottom right are medullary rays as they appear in radial section. Their function is to pass nutrients and water laterally. Tracheids, typically with uniseriate pits, are seen running form top right to bottom left. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
