Tablinum, Casa di Livia, House of Livia Roman frescoes, Roman wall paintings, Palatine Hill, Rome, Italy

The tablinum of the House of Livia, also known as the “Room of Polyphemus”, Palatine Hill, Rome, Italy. Mythological scene depicting Mercury rescuing the mortal woman Io, who had been changed into a white heifer by Zeus in order to disguise his affair with her. Io is facing her guardian Argus while Mercury, arriving from the left, is about to free her. The House of Livia, the wife of Augustus, is conventionally attributed to her based only on the generic name on a clay pipe and circumstantial factors such as proximity to the House of Augustus. The building is located near the Temple of Magna Mater at the western end of the hill, on a lower terrace from the temple. It is notable for its beautiful frescoes.
