This island, mentioned byPaul (see page 621), was in early times in close connection with Phoenicia. Theacquisition of Cyprus from the Turks, by the British (1878), is the last importantevent in its history. The discoveries of Di Cesnola, of Phoenician, Assyrian,Greek, and Roman Antiquities, as related in his Cyprus: its Ancient Cities,Tombs, and Temples (New York, 1878), throw much light on its early Coin of Cypres.
