LUNG ALVEOLUS, SEM
Alveoli are small cavities in the lung grouped together in sacs (the alveolar sac). Alveoli are the terminal elements of the bronchial tree. Gas exchange occurs between air and blood in the alveoli. Once the air has reached the alveolus, oxygen is transferred to venous blood which becomes oxygenated arterial blood. Carbon dioxide is released from the venous blood into the alveolus and expired. This is a section of the bronchioles showing alveolar sacs. SEM x 200
