Here you see the main square of Nikia village, called "Porta" (means "door"). About 50 years ago Nikia had a population of people, today its inhabitants are only 48! The rest of them left the island in search of a better future, mostly in USA and Australia. But they keep returning every summer to see their village and take care of their family houses. Nikia lies right above the volcano of Nisyros. It is an "award" winning square, as it was voted some years ago, as one of the 10 most beautiful squares of the world!
