Part of a disused Swiss mountain irrigation system - a wooden trough called a bisse
Much agriculture in the mountainous canton of Valais in Switzerland was supplied with water through an elaborate network of irrigation channels called bisses. Some of these channels, as shown here, were wooden troughs that ran along the mountainsides. This photograph shows a section of bisse, near the mountain village of Chandolin, that is now disused.
