The Jews did not go into the temple itself to worship; only the priests wereallowed to go there. The people worshipped in the courts of the temple, andwhen they said they were going up to the temple, they meant they were goingup to its courts. The way up to these, on the top of mount Moriah, was by highflights of steps. Herod had eighteen thousand men at work on the temple and its courts, and it took him over nine years to build them. 212.
