A manual of diseases of the nervous system. es present the alterations met with in all acute forms of neuritis, 166 MULTIPLE NEURITIS. essentially tlie same as tliat wHcIl occurs after an injury to a nerve, represented in Figs. 33 and 34 (p. 66), and, associated with inflam-mation of tlie sheath, in Fig. 44 (p. 83). Examination in the recentstate reveals abundant products of the degeneration of the fibres, granule corpuscles, &c. There is a slight increase in the connectivetissue between the fasciculi; the area of these is occupied by ti-acts ofinterstitial tissue, which under a higher magnifying power (b) have abranching form, enclosing spaces which have been occupied by nerve-fibres, and in some of which healthy fibres still remain (c). The spacebetween this tissue is occupied by the products of degeneration of thefibres, but these are rendered invisible by the clearing process, and onlyfaint indications of their outline can be seen (b). In sections stainedwith osmic acid and mounted in glycerine (Fig. 60) these products of. Fia. 60.—Sections from the same sciatic nerve, stained with osmic acid and mountedin glycerine. A. Fasciculus under low power. B. Part of a fasciculus morehighly magnified. 0. Longitudinal section of nerve-fibres. (Prom sectionsprepared by Dr. Beevor.) degeneration, stained dark, are conspicuous. Under a low magnifyingpower (a) a fasciculus is seen to be studded with black granular spots, elongated where the fibres are divided obliquely; the increase in thetissue between these degenerated fibres is distinct; aggregations ofmyelin are seen in the connective tissue between the fasciculi. Undera higher power (b) the dark spots are seen to be the sections ofdegenerated nerve-fibres, in some places two or more being blendedinto a larger mass. In a longitudinal section (c) the process ofdegeneration of the fibres is more distinctly seen, and from it theappearance of the transverse section can be better understood.
