Start of the 2009 Bol d’Or sailing race, on Lac Léman, Geneva. Taken from a high viewpoint overlooking the lake at Cologny.
The Bol d'Or is a Swiss sailing race from Geneva, at one end of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), to Le Bouveret at the other, and then back again - a total distance of 80 nautical miles. First held on July 18 1939 with twenty six competitors, the race now takes place each year in June and attracts nearly 600 yachts to the starting line. The current record times for this race were both set in 1994 when a multi-hull completed the course in 5h 2m, and a monohull in 8h 46m.
