It does, however,at times reduce the deformity, apparently by separat-ing the contiguous carious surfaces, and this withoutpain or any ascertainable untoward results. In cases successfully treated by Mr. Jones the littlepatients are strapped on canvas stretched on a framethat rests on the bed on four short legs. Straps are placed. By this device the patients can bemoved about without interfering in any way with thediseased vertebrae. Sayre uses the wire cuirass withhead-sling and traction from the feet; this apparatuscannot be readily obtained and is expensive. Steele,of St. Louis, attains the same end by a portablestretcher-bed, consisting of a forged, oblong frame offlat bar-iron, made somewhat longer and slightly widerthan the patient, over which are snugly stretched twopieces of strong canvas, one reaching from the buttocksto the top of the frame and the other from just belowthe buttocks to the bottom of the frame, the space be-tween the two being left for the use of the this stretcher the patient is placed, strapped down 71 at the shoulders and hips, and traction is made from
