Twentieth century hand-book for steam engineers and electricians, with questions and answers .. . ning constant, the voltage is pro-portional to the current, so that the amount of currentsent through the milli-voltmeter or ammeter is exactlyproportional to the current flowing through the 79 shows connections for ammeters which carrythe entire current and those used with a shunt. The object of such a construction is apparent. Inthe installation of the switchboard, where eachammeter registers several thousand amperes, it is notnecessary to construct the large conductors in such amanner that the total current is caused to flow throughthe ammeter. For each 1,000 amperes passing overthe shunt only about one-half an ampere will passthrough the ammeter, and the little bobbin will then ELECTRICITY FOR ENGINEERS 139 cause a deflection of the pointer in the meter and thepointer will register 1,000 amperes. Meters of thisdescription are usually connected to their resistanceblocks by a pair of No. 16 flexible lamp cords. Wheninstalling meters of this class, never cut off any of the. /~\
