Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) visiting Hut Hospital at Balaclava, 19th century. Famed for her work during the Crimean War, Nightingale is also revered for having laid the foundations of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St Thomas's Hospital in London. The Battle of Balaclava, fought on 25th October 1854 during the Crimean War, was part of the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55), an Allied attempt to capture the port and fortress of Sevastopol, Russia's principal naval base on the Black Sea.
