Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) is Vienna's iconic church and it's most important religious edifice. Vienna's first parish church was consecrated on this site in 1147. Pieces of that original church survive today inside the grand gothic cathedral. Stephansdom’s roof has more than a quarter of a million glazed ceramic tiles. While the wooden roof was almost entirely destroyed by allied bombing during World War II, the church was faithfully reconstructed and immaculately maintained.
