. Modern magic. : A practical treatise on the art of Fig. 277. Fig. 278. diameter, with a collar at one end pierced with screw-holes for affix-ing it to the under surface of the table. Within this tube works awire rod, /;, three-sixteenths of an inch thick, and terminating in asmall round disc of brass c, just large enough to work freely up anddown the tube. A spiral spring, also of brass, keeps the rod down, 448 MODERN Fig. 279. unless when forced upwards by pulling a piece of whipcord, which isattached to the disc c, and thence passes up the tube, and over a smallpulley d, which is soldered to the collaralready mentioned. When this cord ispulled, b is forced to rise, which it does tothe extent of about two inches above thesurface of the table (see Fig. 278), againsinking under the pressure of the spring,as soon as the pull is relaxed. Each pistonis screwed to the under surface of the topof the table, in which a small hole is bored,in order to allow of the upward passage ofthe piston rod. Where complicated me-chanical pieces have to be worked, three, four, or more of these pistons are placedside by side. The cords are carried behindthe scenes, either directly from the back ofthe table, or down grooves in the legs, andthrough holes in the stage to the hiding-place of the assistant. Where a single piston only is required, it maybe made to work in the central pillar of a light gueridon, or fancytable, s
