Two or three hundred women and children weresaved alive for a time, but when he heard that an English force wasdrawing near Cawnpore, the infamous Mahratta had the whole of hisunfortunate captives hacked to pieces and cast into a well (July 15th).A siege with a very different result was proceeding at Lucknow, whereSir Henry Lawrence, with a single British battalion and a great mass ofEnglish fugitives was being attacked by the main body of the Ouderebels.
