Hip socket anatomy. Artwork of an oblique view of the bones and cartilage of the left hip in a human pelvis. At centre is the lateral surface of the left-hand large ear-shaped hip bone, formed from three fused bones, the ilium, ischium and pubis. These articulate with the head of the femur (thigh bone, lower right) to form the hip joint. The joint surfaces are covered in a form of hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage (white) that protects the bone surface from wear and tear. In the socket (acetabulum) are the acetabular labrum (ring of cartilage, off-white) and the ligamentum teres (ligament of head of femur). Next to the socket is the obturator foramen.
