Young stem, light micrograph. Longitudinal section through a young stem showing an intercalary meristem. Intercalary meristems are found at the base of grass leaves and at the internodes of young stems. The cells of the intercalary meristem are constantly dividing by mitosis to produce files (light blue) of cells which later elongate, enabling plants with these to constantly renew themselves. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
