His son Samuel was mortally wounded in anexpedition to the Penobscot river against the British, in177S, under command of Gen. Lovell. The second officerin command was Gen. Peleg Wadsworth, who built a beau-tiful mansion in Portland, Me., afterward occupied by hisson-in-law, Stephen Longfellow, father of the poet. Briggs Alden was youngest son of Col. John. He earlydeveloped the military tastes inherited from his father andgrandfathers, and became an officer in the local militarycompany. In
