There are few persons who need any thing more than contrivances for the feet, except for a very few timesin the winter; and some would hardly need any thing elseall winter long. Or a shoe might be made, partly on his planand partly on that of a friend of mine, of gutta percha, andoerhaps a little India rubber and cloth. But whatever the material may be, they should be large CLOTHING AND TEMPERATURE. 313 and loose, and shaped like the foot. Only a few days sincea mother was complaining that the middle toes of her littledaughters foot were inclined to overlap the others. On look-ing at the foot, and comparing it with the shoe, the mysterystood revealed. The former was almost twice as broad as theshoe. (See the engraving.)
