A bobbin lace, described under the heading Point Pecheur. Flanders Lace. Flanders asserts priority over Italy in the invention of both needle-point andbobbin lace. Certainly it was a countrywhere both varieties of the fabric earlybecame articles of commerce, and the indus-try throve for more than two centuries onaccount of the encouragement and libertyaccorded to the workers. In the Churchof St. Peters, at Louvain, there is afifteenth-century portrait in which thefigure is adorned with lace; and Baron Ruffenberg, in his memoirs, assertsthat lace caps were worn as early as the fourteenth century. A Flemish poet singsthe praises of lace-making in 1651—Threads which the dropping spider in vainattempts to imitate.
