TV presenter Mike Dilger dons a dry suit to feed swans and wildfowl at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site at Welney, Norfolk, UK. 1st February 2013. It is World Wetlands day on Saturday 2nd February, an event run since 1997 to promote awareness of the value of wetlands. Mike is completing a "Big 9 challenge" visiting all of the Wildfowl and Wetland Trusts UK sites in 9 days. Welney was day 8 and had to wade into the water as the Ouse Washes were flooded due to recent snow melt and rain. The washes are home to thousands of swans and birds that migrate for the winter.
2 February each year is World Wetlands Day. It marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general, and the Ramsar Convention in particular.
