Grey Seals (Halichoerus grypus)
Adults are to 2 metres long (females shorter) and weigh 150-230KgThey have an elongated snout and heavy muzzle with widely separated nostrils. They are dark brown or black with lighter blotches or spots (females are paler). Newborn cubs weigh around 15kgs and have white fur. Mothers milk is 60% fat so pups gain weight very rapidly (around 2kg/day). They suckle for around 3 weeks then are independent. Adults feed on fish, squid, octopus & crustaceans. Found on rocky coasts and exposed areas.
