A woman pushes a pram through the area of Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club, Singapore, with cages of singing birds hung on poles to keep the birds relaxed

Keeping singing birds is an ancient tradition on the Malay Peninsula, which includes Singapore. Bird singing competitions have been very popular, but have almost been entirely edged out by more modern pastimes. Competitions are still regularly held at Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club, the most beautifully singing birds garnering a reward (or rather their owners).
