After graduating from the Danvers High School withscholarship honors he entered Amherst College, graduating in 1900with the degree of cum laude, and a winner of the Hardy Prizefor excellence in debate. During his preparatory school days hewas the organizer and for three years served as president of theSumner Club, Lyceum League of America, under the YouthsCompanion, for the purpose of promoting debating among ^i/BR.
