He subsequentlygave lecluies on elocution, and for a shortperiod was manager of Drury Lane The-atre. A pension was granted to him byLord Bute. He died in 1788. His chiefworks are, an Ortlioepical Dictionary ofthe English Language; and A Life of , Frances, wife of theforegoing, whose maiden name was Ch , was born, about 1724, atDublin, and died in 1767. She wrote Sid-ney Biddulph, a novel; Nourjahad, aneastern romance; and the comedies of TheDiscovery, and The Dupe. SHI 4S7. SHERIDAN, Richard Brinsley,was born, October 31, 1751, at Dublin;was educated at Harrow, and studied thelaw at Lincolns Inn; but was not called tothe bar. He married early in life, and,having exhausted his pecuniary resources,he looked to literature for his immediatesubsistence. His first dramatic attempt wasThe Rivals, which was but imperfectly suc-cessful. The Duenna, however, and TheSchool for Scandal, placed him foremostamong living dramatists; and he sustainedhis reputation by The Critic. In 1776 hebecame one of the proprietors of Drury LaneTheatre; and in 1780 he was elected mem-ber for Stafford. For two and thirty yearshe pursued a splendid parliamentary career,during which he wasuinivalled in wit, andhad few e(|iials in eloquence. One of hisgreatest efiorts of oratory was his speech,as manager, upon tiie inipeachment ofHastings. He was thrice in office, forshort period
