Kids feeding birds near the old bridge across the moat surrounding Fredrikstad Old Town
Fredrikstad Old Town (Gamlebyen) is a fortified town located near the mouth of the Glomma river. It is considered to be one of the best preserved fortified towns in Northern Europe. The town is located on the eastern side of the river, while the modern town center is directly opposite it on the other side of the river. The town was founded at this location in response to previous attacks by Swedish forces. The town was founded in 1567, the same year as Swedish forces burnt the nearby town of Sarpsborg. Following the attack the Sarpsborg citizens petitioned the king for permission to re-build the town closer to the mouth of the Glomma river as it was thought this would be a easier location to defend.
