A Forgotten Goveknok of Bojibay. It is not easy to write a sketch of an undistinguished man—or of one who seldom, if ever, rises above mediocrity, who passesthrougli life without one brilliant episode, whose name exists inno biographical dictionary, and to whom no niche has beenassigned in the temple of fame.* It is not thus with him ofPlassey or the hero of Assaye, or even his viceregal brother theMarquis of Wellesley, of whom men spoke on his death in thismaguiloquent language:— Euro]ie and Asia, saved by thee, proclaimInvincible in war thy deathless fame. Though General Sir William Medows served his king andcountry well in Europe, Asia and America, there is not onevestige to recall his memory, except that well-known thorough-fare in Bombay whicli bears the name of Medows Street, andeven it is supposed by many people to have some reference
