Toanswer such questions, it is necessary for us to discuss theproblem of the palaeography of the inscription. Ill When we consider the external form and the directionof the writing, the cippus does not present any chrono-logical data helpful to us in our task. For, indeed, wefind this form of monument and this direction of writingthroughout Latium and Magna Graecia in an age far morerecent.
