Early Christian martyr and Arab doctor of medicine, Saint Cosmas, whose name appears in Glagolitic script in his halo. Renaissance fresco by 1400s German artist, Albert of Konstanz, in Church of the Blessed Virgin and Saint George the Younger at Plomin, Istria, Croatia. Cosmas and his brother, Damian, were skilled physicians who practised in the Mediterranean port city of Aegeae, then in Roman Syria and now in modern Turkey’s Adana province. They were arrested, tortured and executed during the persecution of Christians by Roman Emperor Diocletian.

Plomin, Istria, Croatia: this 15th century fresco by the German artist Albert of Konstanz, also known as Master Albert or Albertus de Constancia, depicts the 3rd century Arab physician and early Christian martyr, Saint Cosmas. The saint’s name appears in Glagolitic script in the halo. St Cosmas and his brother, St Damian, were both skilled doctors who practised in the Mediterranean port city of Aegeae, then in Roman Syria and now in modern Turkey’s Adana province. They were arrested during the persecution of Christians ordered by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, but refused to recant their faith under torture and endured being hung on a cross, stoned and shot with arrows before being beheaded. Their three younger brothers are said to have shared their martyrdom. This fresco is part of a larger work discovered in 1994 behind a Baroque altar removed for restoration from the Church of the Blessed Virgin and Saint George the Younger at Plomin. The church was founded in 1474.
