Peninsular War (1808-1814). Catalonia. Siege of Gerona (6 May 1809). Feat of Sub-lieutenant Mariano Montoro, from the Vich volunteers. On 3 July 1809, during the French artillery attack on Montjuic Castle, a Spanish flag was hit by French cannon fire and fell into the moat, whereupon Sub-lieutenant Montoro went down to pick it up and hoisted it up again, nailing it to the top of the castle.
