The Cherbourg Fetes - Arrival of Her Majesty at Cherbourg, 1858. 'When the Queen [Victoria] and her suite arrived at Cherbourg there were great demonstrations on shore. The waters that wash the harbour had a gay appearance at the time, being covered with crafts of all description, with colours and flags flying. As soon as the Emperor received the intelligence that her Majesty had entered the harbour he proceeded at once to pay his personal respects, and was duly received on board the Royal yacht'.
