THE CANAL HILE journeying from east to west on the New York,Chicago & St. Louis railway, the traveler experiences inwestern Ohio an uninteresting ride through heavily-woodeddistricts until, a half hour after crossing the Indiana line, hecomes suddenly to a noble river, along whose precipitousbanks he is whirled for several miles. Houses multiply,and are seen to be aligned in streets; the smoke of manyfactories curls about the train, shutting out the glimpsesof stately churches, tall business blocks, tasteful residences and the otherabundant evidences of a rich and prosperous city. The journey is now along an abandoned water way. Suddenly,close to the railroad, but high above it, comes in view a modest littlepark. On a tall staff floats the American flag and from the well keptenclosure a cannon looks out, as if to keep watch and ward againstassailants, who may be expected to swarm up f
