Prostate cancer radiotherapy scan. Fluoroscopic image of radioactive sources (small dots) implanted to treat a patient's prostate cancer. The scan is taken to check correct positioning relative to the tumour. The trans-rectal ultrasound probe used to help position the implants is also visible (cylinder, lower centre). This process involves the use of long, hollow needles that are inserted into the prostate through the patient's perineal skin, to implant the radioactive sources. This type of treatment is known as brachytherapy, and is a form of radiotherapy. The radiation kills the cancerous cells.
