HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA, SYMBOL

Hypercholesterolemia, or high serum cholesterol (above mmol/l), is a primary or secondary metabolic disorder. Primary hypercholesterolemia is a genetic disease; the major form is familial xanthomatosis. The danger of hypercholesterolemia resides in the cardiovascular risk. Several types of hypercholesterolemia occur in subjects with hypertriglyceridemia. Type IIA nd IIB in the Fredrickson classification respond poorly to diet. The different types of hypercholesterolemia are identified by studying the subject’s serum using a technique called electrophoresis. Serum can be clear, opalescent, lactescent, or creamy.
