A child from the Karen tribe poses for tourists at a village where her people now live near Chiang Mai.

The women of the Karen tribe use metal rings to apparently elongate their necks. In fact the neck vertebrae are not lengthened, rather the shoulders are pushed down. However the effect of wearing the rings suggests a long neck. The Karen tribeswoman pictured here is a refugee from Burma (Myanmar). She and many other tribes people have sought refuge in Thailand to escape persecution by the military in their native land. The people of this tribe have been settled on land from a failed speculative development just outside of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Here they make a living from tourists visiting their village. It seemed a little sad to see the women, and others in the village, posing for tourists by providing a window into how their lives might have been. However this must be balanced by the facts that they are now safe from persecution and are making a living. There are also issues around whether this child should be in school or spending her day posing for tourists.
