If this isdone soon after beingshod or during thesame day, all that maybe necessary to do is toleave the nail out. I have had excellentsuccess by pouring alittle callendula intothe hole. In one case,where there was con-siderable soreness afew hours after beingshod, though the horsewas quite lame on ac-count of the nail beingdriven too deep, afterpulling out then ail, alittle callendula was poured in, and the shoe again put on, and thehorse in a few hours was free from lameness. But if he shows lame-ness in a day or so after being shod, cut away the wall from around the hole, so as tolet out any mat-ter which mayhave fo r m e poultice thefoot until the in-flammation sub-sides, then coverthe hole with alittle digestiveointment (whichis made by melt-ing together equalparts of tar andhogs lard, andstirring till cool), over whic
