Just within the lateralmargin, near the frontal end, is theisland of Reil, or central lobe (insula).Medial to this is the periclaustral(white) lamina covering the irregularstrip of gray, the claustrum. This isone of the basal ganglia and probablyrepresents an isolated portion of thecortex of the insula. Medial to theclaustrum lies a narrow strip ofwhite nerve tissue the externalcapsule and frontally, caudally, anddorsally it connects with the internalcapsule and represents fibers of an associative nature for the corticalregions around the insula. It contains a few fibers that pass to andfrom the thalamus. The next medially placed structure is the corpus striatum consist-ing of two masses of gray, the lenticular and caudate nuclei, separatedfrom each other by the frontal hmb of the internal capsule. Thecaudal limb of the internal capsule separates the lenticular nucleusfrom the Fig. 296.—Horizontal section of theright cerebral hemisphere through thecorpus striatum. {From a photograph.)C, Caudate nucleus; /, internal capsule(anterior limb); c, posterior limb; Ins,insula; CI, claustrum; OK, optic radia-tion; Th, thalamus. THE STRUCTURE OF THE CORPUS STRIATUM 411 The lenticular nucleus {nucleus lentiformis) is surrounded by whitesubstance and is shaped like a triangular pyramid, or on section itresembles a biconvex lens, hence the name. It is divided into threemain masses and each of these has fine bands of white giving a stri-ated appearance to the mass. The largest and lateral segment iscalled the putamen while the other two constitute the glohis pallidus. The caudate nucleus {nucleus caudatus) as the diagram shows, is a
