Bangladesh is a riverain country. About 800 rivers flows the heart of this beautiful country constituting a water way of total length around 24,140 km. Most of the country’s land is formed through silt brought by the rivers. But due to climatic change, global warming and man made disasters small rivers are all ready dead , mediums are on death ill and maximum big rivers are fighting to survive. The river Turag a rich branch of historical river Buriganga ( the capital city Dhaka of Bangladesh stands on the bank of this river) has flown from northern part of Dhaka to Gajipur district. The vawal mirjapur portion of Turag river is knocking to the door of death by the aggression of local land rovers and industrialists. A large swathe of the Turag river which was the life line of the vawal mirjapur area of Gajipur district has turned pitch – black with toxic waste flowing in to it from industrial units of local influential industrialists . Oblivious of health hazards of surrounding inhabitants of the river . The surrounding industries like garment , brick field , dying and printing industrial units are still dumping waste and liquid chemical in to this death ill river every day . Most of industries do not have treatment plants and even the ones with such plants often refrain from using them to save operational costs . As a result many industries discharging untreated liquid waste directly in to rivers . This type of unabated river pollution forced the people depend to more on underground water for drinking and house hold work causing depletion of underground water at an alarming rate. We must give the highest priority to provide the fresh flow to the rivers for serving the fresh breathe to the in habitants of this country because the rivers are the life blood of the Bangladesh economy and social life as well as cultural life also .
